Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS)




Micro Electromechanical Systems is the technology of the very small, and merges at the nana-scale into nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and nanotechnology. MEMS are also referred to as micromachines or Micro Systems Technology - MST (in Europe). MEMS are separate and distinct from the hypothetical vision of molecular nanotechnology or molecular electronics.




MEMS are made up of components between 1 to 100 micrometers in size and MEMS devices generally range in size from 20 micrometers to a millimeter. They usually consist of a central unit that processes data, the microprocessor and several components that interact with the outside such as micro sensors. At these size scales, the standard constructs of classical physics do not always hold true. Due to MEMS' large surface area to volume ratio, surface effects such as electrostatics and wetting dominate volume effects such as inertia or thermal mass.The potential of very small machines was appreciated long before the technology existed that could make them----see, for example, Richard Feynman's famous 1960 lecture There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom. MEMS became practical once they could be fabricated using modified semiconductor fabrication technologies, normally used to make electronics. Hard Disk














Introduced in 1957, the IBM-made random right of entry method of accounting and control (RAMAC) was the first disk drive. It consisted of 50 magnetic disks of 24-inch in diameter and revolving at 1200 RPM. Two air-bearing supported magnetic heads accessed all 50 disks. The storage capacity of this system was 5 MB with the information rate of 12.5 kB/s, and the system was rented to the end user for $130 a month. The system used Aluminum sliders, Mu-metal heads, had 20 track per inch and 0.002 Mb/in2, and the slider / disk spacing was about 20 micrometers. About 40 years later, the IBM Travel star 6GT drive has 3 thin-film 2.5 inch disks and 6 earthenware sliders with the heads working on magneto-resistive principles and flying over the disk surface at only about a few dozens nm. The track density is 16,000 TPI (track per inch) and the areal thickness is 4.1 GB/in2. The drive's 33.3 MB/sec data transfer rate reimbursement from the Ultra DMA border. In fact, this drive is not the latest and the best, it just was arbitrarily chosen to make one tip - there has been a huge development in the field of hard disk drive (HDD) skill in the 40 years, and the rate of this progress is just rising year after year.

Micro electromechanical systems

The term mems, for micro electro mechanical systems, was discovered in the 1980’s to describe new, sophisticated mechanical systems on a chip, such as micro electric motors, resonators and so on. Today, the term mems in practice is cause to refer to any microscopic electronic with a mechanical function, which can be fabricated in a batch process in england, the term mst for micro system technology is preferred, and in japan mems are simply referred to as "Micromachines".


The overviews in these terms are relatively minor and are often used interchange.though mems processes are generally classified into a number of categories --- such as surface machining, bulk machining, liga, and efab --- there are indeed thousands of different mems processes. Some produce fairly simple geometries, while others offer more complex 3_d geometries and more versatility. A company making accelerometers for airbags would need a completely different design and process to produce an accelerometer for inertial navigation. Changing from an accelerometer to another inertial device such as a gyroscope requires an even greater change in design and process, and most likely a completely different fabrication facility and engineering team.mems technology has generated a tremendous amount of excitement, due to the vast range of important applications where mems can offer previously unattainable performance and reliability standards. In an age where everything must be smaller, faster, and cheaper, mems offers a compelling solution. Mems have already had a profound impact on certain applications such as automotive sensors and inkjet printers. The emerging mems industry is already a multi-billion dollar market. It is expected to grow rapidly and become one of the major industries of the 21st century. Cahners in--stat group has projected sales of mems to reach $13b by 2004. The european nexus group projects even larger revenues, using a more inclusive definition of mems.microtechnology is often constructed using photolithography. Lightwaves are focused through a mask onto a surface. They solidify a chemical film. The soft, unexposed parts of the film are washed away.
